Growth and development are two different things. Actually they are expected to go together. A child when growing up with good parental care, is expected to be developing in good health, in knowledge, in physical appearance and gradually be moving away from the stage of tenderness towards excellence and maturity when the parent will eventually have relieve. On the other hand, a child that lacks development will only be growing tall but due to lack of nourishment will not look of attractive. Although, the spirit of excellence will be there, but his inability to flourish will be glaring to people.
Many African countries are under developed. Just like human being, a country can grow and lacks development. The third world countries of the world include largely, African countries.
in actual fact the variables of under-development and developing are with the African Countries.
VARIABLES OF UNDERDEVELOPMENT
Many African countries are weighed down with self inflicted injures of underdevelopment. Togo, Republic of Benin, Gambia, Somalia is examples of under developed countries in Africa. A country moving toward becoming like united kingdom, Sweden, Japan are referred to as Developing Countries, Nigeria is regarded a developing country.
African Countries are 53 and Nigeria long accounts for 25% of African population. In this paper, i want to largely concentrate on Nigeria because other Africa country sees Nigeria as the beacon of hope also the giant. Moreover, the Variables of underdevelopment that are with African countries are also common with Nigeria.
In the sixties up to around 1974, there were just four universities in Nigeria. They were namely: The University of Ibadan, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, Ahmadu Bello University ad University of Lagos. We also had three Polytechnic; Yaba College of Technology, the Polytechnic Ibadan and Kaduna Polytechnic and the quality of life enjoyed by the graduates and people was very high as compared to the present day situation. In the late 50s and early 60s, the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan was the 4th Best College of Medicine in the Commonwealth Countries. British students were coming to UCH Ibadan to study medicine.
There are better roads today. More airports than in the past, today, we produce graduates from high institutions yearly in hundreds of thousands unlike in the past. All these are indication of growth. The Big question now is; are we making development commensurate with our growth?
In this past, British people, American people, Indians used to come to Nigeria for greener pasture but today our graduates are travelling to Europe and Arabian countries to enslave themselves despite our growth with steady income from export of crude oil. We must move away from this position. We need industrial revolution to propel economic buoyancy.
INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION IN NIGERIA
On February 11, 2014 President Jonathan launches Industrial Revolution plan (NIRP) and National enterprise Development programme (NEDED) at the Banquet hall of the Presidential Villa, Aso Rock. According to the Nigerian Tribune February 12, 2014 Page 8 “The president observed that a great economy must be based on solid industrial sector with well diversifies minds and sources of revenue, as well as a vibrant micro and small medium enterprise sector to create jobs and provide leverages.
According to him, the NIRP and NEDEP would help to fast track the attainment of these goals as they were targeted at transforming Nigerian Business and improving the living standard of the ordinary people. While hoping that the NIRP and NEDEP would be major additional to these landmark achievements, the president observed that the National Industrial Revolution plan, which he said was the most ambitious industrialization programme ever pursued in Nigeria, would accelerate areas where Nigeria has comparative and competitive one in Africa and in the top ten globally’.
Lack of Technological Might
Nigeria lacks the willingness to become mighty in technology. This is similar to virtually African Countries. Nigeria is a dumping ground for products from India, Japan, England, Sweden, Italy, France, even agricultural products such as cows and beans from Chad.
We import Cooking stoves, wrist watches, cutleries, torch lights, motor bikes, bicycles, electric bulbs, staplers, motor cars, padlocks, keys, vehicles like motor bike (Okada) Lorries, trailers and used and disused clothes from Abroad (including underwear, pants, shocks e.t.c).
Motor Vehicle Production
The centre for automotive design and development at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1990 was put in place to develop a Nigerian car. See Pages 8 and 9 Sunday Tribune of November 20, 1994.
The Centre was equipped with the necessary funds but for ten years, there was no result until the year 2000 when president Obasanjo closed it down.
In March 1998, tricycles hit Lagos roads; see Guardian issues of March 3, 1998 page 13 under the caption “Tricycles hit Lagos roads this week” “The new mode of transportation in Lagos, the three wheller Autoricsha may hit the roads this week. The state government has finalized plans for the presentation of the new tricycles of Logicians.
